This strainer is created from stoneware clay which is gradually compressed into a large slab by multiple passes through a hand-cranked slab roller. The clay is then draped in a slump mold and allowed to partially dry. Variable sized drainage holes are cut into the clay and the bottom is flattened with a wood paddle.
